A218 Weekly 14-20MAY

Posted: May 14, 2012 by access218 in News and Review

World Religions Summer Series Tuesday 15MAY: “Hinduism”  How would you describe pantheism? Monotheism may be the claim of the three Abrahamic faiths (Judaism, Christianity, Islam), but Hinduism claims the existence of multiple gods. What is karma? How does the Hindu concept of karma differ from that of Buddhist karma? If you want to be convinced of the truths of Christianity, you have to study the world’s other religions. Our discussion will not  create a straw man out of other religions and then beat them up. We will take a sincere look at what each religion believes and how they practice their faith. During week 01, we will take a look at the world’s oldest established religion – Hinduism.  Submit questions for discussion to Lance ([email protected]).

A218 Weekly 19-25MAR

Posted: March 15, 2012 by access218 in Event Horizon, News and Review

Tuesday 20MAR: “[SJ] Involved”

When Christians fail to take action in correlation to our faith we “starve Jesus” (see Matthew 25:35-46).  We continue our 7-week“Starving Jesus: The Danger of Faith Without Action” series in conjunction with the long-observed ancient Christian tradition of Lent.  Each week leading up to Resurrection Sunday (easter), we will focus on developing one of six biblical HABITS.  This week we explore what it mean to be“Involved in Church”.  We have questions about church: Why should I go to church? Do I have to go to church to be a Christian? What is supposed to happen as part of church? What does it mean to be involved in church? These are meaningful questions. Let’s discover the insights of ‘involvement’ together.

Come discover more.  Let’s meet for a good meal, live music, and meaningful discipleship.  Explore more about ACCESS218 on the ‘Connect Weekly’ tab above.

A218 Weekly Primer

Get primed for next week’s conversation. Read one chapter a day this week of the book of Acts or Matthew (corresponding to date). Just worry about one chapter a day. If you miss a day, don’t try to catch up, just read today’s recommended reading. Our unorthodox week goes from Tuesday to Monday:  Tue 20MAR: Matthew 20  -  Wed 21MAR: Matthew 21  -  Thu 22MAR: Matthew 22  -  Fri 23MAR: Matthew 23  -  Sat 24MAR: Matthew 24  -  Sun 25MAR: Matthew 25  -  Mon 26MAR: Matthew 26

Monday 27MAR: “[SJ] Tithe/Give”

One of six HABITS we are exploring during our Starving Jesus series is “Tithe/Give” and involves what John Wesley and we as Methodists refer to as actively giving our “prayers, presence, gifts, service, and witness.”  We have questions and concerns about tithing/giving:  What is the purpose of tithing? How much should I give?  Is the tithe just about money?  Is 10% a legal requirement?  Why does it seem like churches are always asking for my money? Should I expect something to happen with what I tithe/give?  These are meaningful questions. Let’s discover the insights of tithing/giving together.

Stop Hunger Now Meals arrive in Haiti

Posted: January 25, 2012 by access218 in News and Review

Below is the email from our Stop Hunger Now contact in reference to the 15,000 meals we packed in October. Yay God!

“I am excited to report that the meals from your recent packaging event shipped out from the Kinston, NC warehouse on 23DEC. Even though the meals were not necessarily packed as part of a holiday event, it is exciting to think about how your meals will enhance the New Year for kids in Haiti for months to come. Several of the groups did package meals as part of their Thanksgiving observances. All of us have so much to be grateful for and we are thankful for every one that money, time and/or energy to help package these meals.

“These 142,500 meals are headed for St. Andre’s School in Hinche, Haiti, which serves 930 students from pre-school through high school. Many of the children at St. Andre’s would not eat every day were it not for the meals they receive at school, as this is often the only hot meal they get all day. This food will enable the children to stay awake in class, learn effectively, and look forward to a brighter future. For more information about St. Andre’s School please check their website: @ http://www.saintdunstanschurch.org/st-andre%E2%80%99s-haiti/saint-andres-school-hinche-haiti/

“As we look forward to 2012, we hope that as you prepare for the New Year you are making plans for another packaging event. Thank you for your commitment to a world without hunger! I wish for you, your family, and the church or group that you represent, a wonderful Christmas season.”

A218 Weekly 23-29JAN

Posted: January 23, 2012 by access218 in News and Review

Tuesday 24JAN: “[LiT] Tray” We are exploring what it practically looks like to “love others” (John 13:34-35).  We assert that love is not cheesy or hokey or silly or idealistic.  Love takes courage.  Somehow love gets lost in translation at times.  “Tray” refers to the love language of “serving others.”  For many people this is how they primarily express affection toward others.  What does “tray” look like when it is being expressed toward us and how can we show this ‘language’ to those who prefer to receive it? Let’s meet for a good meal, live music, and meaningful discipleship.  Discover more about ACCESS218 on the ‘Connect Weekly’ tab above.

Tuesday 01FEB: “[LiT] Gift” Giving Gifts are one of the five languages we use to share and receive love.  A gift is something you can hold in your hand and say, “Look, s/he was thinking of me.”  This may be your primary “love language” or it may be a friend, family-member, or co-worker’s language and you didn’t know it.  How does God share words of affirmation with us and how do we share/receive these ‘words’ with/from others?

A218 Weekly 09-15JAN

Tuesday 10JAN: “Lost In Translation” Start a new habit this year and meet at ACCESS218.  We launch the new year by exploring what it practically looks like to “love others” (John 13:34-35).  We assert that love is not cheesy or hokey or silly or idealistic.  Love takes courage.  Somehow love gets lost in translation at times.  Let’s meet for a good meal, live music, and meaningful discipleship.  Discover more about A218 on the ‘Connect Weekly’ tab above.

Tuesday 17JAN: “[LiT] Affirm” Words of Affirmation are one of the five languages we use to share and receive love.  These are as simple as a passing compliment but also go deeper.  This may be your primary “love language” or it may be a friend, family-member, or co-worker’s language and you didn’t know it.  How does God share words of affirmation with us and how do we share/receive these ‘words’ with/from others?

>>> EVENT HORIZON

A Mission Every Month During the month of January, we will focus on what John Wesley referred to as “Inner Holiness” and inward service to God.  All our service & mission is either and inward or outward response to God.  The project we will undertake is one of “contemplatio”, as the ancients would term it.  Each week we’ll undertake this endeavor!
